Realities demand adaptive budgeting
The current economy, indeed, calls for innovation and thinking outside the box in Island County. And, of course, at the clear direction of voters, we must make do with less, something Island County has been doing for over two years.

County must reset budget approach
Recently Island County voters soundly rejected a proposed property tax increase. In doing so, they told the Island County commissioners they want them to do what all of us have been doing lately: make do with less. The bottom line is clear: County government can’t ignore the new economic reality faced by the citizens who fund it.

Vote yes on Prop. 1
Some voters have already made up their minds about Prop. 1, the proposed levy lift aimed at keeping county government afloat. Others have yet to decide, with one of the primary concerns being that the proposal gives the Island County commissioners the option of increasing property taxes to keep up with inflation.

The letter arrived last week in a plain white business envelope with no return address. Inside, the question was hand-written on a plain piece of white copy paper, with no signature to indicate who wrote it: "Will Coupeville still have a local paper?"
